Introducing Project Kuiper by Amazon. Amazon has invested nearly $140 million in a state-of-the-art payload processing facility at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center (KSC). The 100,000‑sq‑ft facility, built at Space Florida’s Launch and Landing Facility, became operational in April 2025 to prepare satellites for launch on Atlas V, Vulcan Centaur, Blue Origin’s New Glenn, and SpaceX Launch vehicles.

An additional $19.5 million is now funding a 42,000‑sq‑ft support structure adjacent to the main building, bringing the total Florida investment to around $140 million.

This facility supports up to three simultaneous launch campaigns, processing more than 100 satellites per month—a critical capability for deploying the planned 3,236‑satellite Kuiper constellation into low Earth orbit (LEO).

Planned Project Kuiper Overview & Launch Activity

  • Project Kuiper is Amazon’s multi-billion-dollar initiative (estimated at over $10 billion) to deploy a global LEO satellite internet network—3,236 satellites—aimed at rivaling SpaceX’s Starlink.
  • The first 27 production satellites launched on April 28, 2025, aboard a ULA Atlas V rocket from Cape Canaveral; a second tranche of 27 satellites followed on June 23, 2025.
  • The FCC requires Amazon to deploy at least 1,618 satellites by July 2026, though delays mean it may request an extension.

Local & Economic Impacts for Florida

Jobs & Jobs Pipeline:

  • The new facility and its support buildings bring hundreds of construction and full-time technical jobs to Brevard County.
  • Amazon advertises roles spanning electrical, mechanical, and aerospace engineering, software, production technicians, and logistics—a major opportunity for Florida universities and skilled workforce programs.
  • This investment enhances regional workforce development, blending private sector growth with educational pathways in STEM.

Market & Supply Chain:

  • Florida’s Space Coast becomes a central node in the global satellite deployment supply chain—with ripple effects on manufacturing, shipping, logistics, and subcontractors.
  • Local businesses—from cleanroom suppliers to local support services—stand to benefit from increased activity.

Increased Launch Activity:

  • With satellite processing underway on-site, Cape Canaveral launch cadence is set to accelerate. Florida will host frequent Kuiper missions via ULA Atlas V, Vulcan, Arianespace, Blue Origin, and even SpaceX Falcon 9 launches—all staged from KSC and CCSFS

Why Floridians Should Care

  • Students and graduates from Florida schools (ECE, aerospace engineering, computer science) will find local, high-tech job opportunities without relocation.
  • The facility and workforce presence add to KSC’s growing status as a multi-user commercial spaceport, creating a dynamic ecosystem for innovation.
  • Community impact includes job creation, infrastructure growth, educational engagement, and enhanced national visibility as Florida cements its leadership in the space industry.

What’s Next?

  • Amazon plans to ramp up satellite production, with capacity eventually reaching five satellites per day, supported by the Florida hub and Seattle-area manufacturing lines.
  • As the constellation grows, consumer service is expected to start later in 2025, covering underserved regions worldwide.
  • With launches planned through 2029, and multiple providers booked, expect sustained activity—dozens of missions per year—from Cape Canaveral.
