Aldi to Replace Winn-Dixie at Northdale Promenade in Tampa’s Carrollwood Neighborhood

TAMPA, FL — A familiar site in Tampa’s Carrollwood community is getting a new lease on life. Aldi, the popular discount grocer, is taking over the former Winn-Dixie location at Northdale Promenade, located at 15692 N Dale Mabry Highway. This high-traffic corridor near Carrollwood is the latest target in Aldi’s sweeping Florida expansion strategy.

The transformation is part of a much broader retail shift statewide. In 2024, Southeastern Grocers—the parent company of Winn-Dixie and Harveys—agreed to divest more than 400 stores, many of which were acquired by Aldi. The Northdale location closed in spring 2024, and Aldi has announced plans to reopen by late 2025 following extensive renovations.

Aldi’s growth in Florida has been nothing short of aggressive. Over the last five years, the company has doubled its presence in the Sunshine State, now operating more than 230 stores. This includes numerous conversions of former Winn-Dixie and Harveys locations. For residents of Northdale and Lake Magdalene, the shift represents not just a change in signage but a change in how they shop.

“It’s bittersweet to see Winn-Dixie go, but Aldi’s prices make it easier to feed a family,” said Carrollwood resident Sandra Lopez, reflecting the mixed reactions within the community.

Northdale Promenade remains a strong retail hub, anchored by tenants like Big Lots, Crunch Fitness, and Tijuana Flats. The arrival of Aldi is expected to boost foot traffic, as shoppers drawn by affordability, fresh produce, and quick in-and-out service return to a revitalized shopping center. The Carrollwood area is increasingly competitive when it comes to grocery retail, with Publix maintaining multiple locations nearby, and specialty grocers like Sprouts Farmers Market, Trader Joe’s, and Whole Foods all within a short drive.

Aldi stores are known for their minimalist layouts, self-bagging model, and high-quality private-label goods priced up to 30% lower than traditional grocery chains. The new location will feature the brand’s typical compact footprint designed for speed, efficiency, and cost savings.

From an economic standpoint, this move is more than just a rebrand—it reflects deeper trends in consumer preference, real estate adaptation, and the growing appeal of value-based grocery options. Tampa’s suburban corridors are evolving, and Carrollwood is emerging as a focal point in the future of Florida’s retail landscape.
