A Brief History of ICSC

Founded in 1957 by a small group of shopping center developers, the International Council of Shopping Centers has grown into a global trade association with over 70,000 members in more than 100 countries.

Originally focused on shopping center development, ICSC now serves the broader marketplaces industry, including mixed-use projects, experiential retail, and innovative community spaces. In 2021, the organization rebranded its name to simply ICSC, reflecting its mission: “Innovating Commerce Serving Communities.”
