Manatee County, FL – The long-awaited final segment of the 44th Avenue East Extension is set to officially open this Saturday, marking a major milestone in the county’s ongoing effort to improve traffic flow, reduce congestion, and enhance access between the eastern and western parts of the region. The new two-mile segment connects Lena Road across Interstate 75 to Lakewood Ranch and beyond, completing an 8-mile east-west corridor that has been decades in the making.

A Direct Route Across Manatee County
The 44th Avenue East Extension, now fully open, offers drivers in Lakewood Ranch, Parrish, and East Bradenton a critical alternative to the increasingly congested State Roads 64 and 70. With a newly constructed overpass over I-75, this corridor enables seamless east-west travel without the need to funnel through overburdened interstate exits or major commercial intersections.
This infrastructure upgrade includes four traffic lanes, sidewalks, multi-use trails, and bike lanes, making it accessible for both vehicles and alternative forms of transportation. The project is designed to accommodate approximately 36,000 vehicles per day and is expected to divert more than 20,000 vehicles away from SR 70 and SR 64.

A Boost for Beach Access – From 44th Ave to Cortez Road to the Beach
For residents in Lakewood Ranch and Parrish, the new extension represents a significant reduction in travel time to the Gulf Coast, including the popular destination of Anna Maria Island. Instead of navigating through slower corridors clogged with seasonal and weekend traffic, drivers can now reach Cortez Road more efficiently, offering quicker access to the barrier islands and nearby beach communities.
This improved connectivity is especially beneficial for weekend travelers and seasonal residents who frequent the beaches but prefer to live or stay inland. With this new route, the hassle of long delays and detours to reach Anna Maria is considerably reduced.

Relief for Commuters and Local Businesses
The new corridor is also expected to ease the daily commute for thousands of residents traveling to work or school. By alleviating pressure on traditional east-west routes, the extension makes driving safer, quicker, and more predictable. It also supports local businesses by improving delivery times and increasing access to commercial areas on both sides of the county.
The roundabout at Lena Road, updated lighting, and pedestrian-friendly infrastructure further support a more modern and accessible roadway network that aligns with the region’s fast-paced growth.
A Vision Decades in the Making
The 44th Avenue Extension project dates back to planning initiatives from 1968 and was officially revived in 1989 as growth in eastern Manatee County surged. Construction of the segmented corridor began in 2013 and was completed in phases. The final stretch, which includes the I-75 overpass, represents the culmination of more than 50 years of visioning and over $268 million in public infrastructure investment.
The project was funded through a combination of county bonds, developer contributions, and state and federal transportation grants. With its completion, local officials anticipate transformative results for traffic management and community development.
It Will Save About ~10 minutes To Visit Anna Maria Island from LWR
The 44th Avenue East Extension is not just a road—it is a strategic connector that supports the future of Manatee County. As the population continues to grow and housing developments expand further east, infrastructure projects like this one are critical to maintaining mobility, reducing travel stress, and enhancing the quality of life for residents.
For families heading to the beach, businesses depending on efficient transportation, or commuters navigating the daily grind, the opening of this new thoroughfare signals a brighter and more connected future for Manatee County.
